ORU students Sean Estes and Jennifer Luth both brought home prizes from the annual American Society of Mechanical Engineers Student Professional Development Conference. Estes won the Old Guard Poster Competition with his poster on "The Development of a Small-Scale Vertical Axis Wind Turbine" and Luth received second place with her poster "Remote-Controlled Robot with Ramp for Rock Retrieval."

Other competitors for these awards hailed from universities such as Arkansas Tech University, Brigham Young University, Texas Tech University, University of Houston, University of Arkansas, University of Colorado / Denver, University of Texas at Tyler, University of Texas / Pan American and the University of Tulsa. According to the ASME Web site, the Old Guard is a section of ASME that is dedicated to helping young engineers bridge the gap between education and career. Eleven ORU engineering and physics students participated in the conference. This year the conference was hosted by the University of Texas at Arlington on April 17 and 18.
