Biology Major

Bachelor of Science Degree

Program Overview

The Biology Department at ORU stimulates students to acquire a working knowledge of biological systems to be able to address biological challenges that affect their daily lives. The program integrates biblical faith with the study of the biological sciences providing an educationally and biblically sound perspective enabling students to interact with, understand and positively respond to scientific challenges. At ORU a vocation in biology is seen as a God-ordained calling into the study of the wonders of His creation.

The biology major meets the needs of students who desire to:

"Being a biology major allows me to interact one-on-one with faculty and advisors, perform research, hold leadership in honor societies, and work in the laboratory as a teaching assistant. The classes are challenging and the opportunities available prepare me exceedingly well for medical school.

"The school offers the close interaction of faculty and students as well as providing as many leadership opportunities as you desire to become involved in."

  • Acquire a technical background in the life sciences
  • Pursue graduate work in biology
  • Train for work in industry and government
  • Prepare for professional training in medical schools and other health professions
  • Prepare for a teaching major or minor in secondary education

The Biology Major at ORU offers three areas of concentration: Pre-Medical Emphasis, Health Professions Emphasis and Environmental Science Emphasis.

Pre-Medical Emphasis and Health Professionals Emphasis
Admission to medical, dental and most other health profession schools in the United States is very selective. Only students with excellent grades and admission test scores, knowledge of their health profession and in most cases, health care experience are being admitted. ORU offers several pre-professional programs in the health sciences including pre-medical, pre-dentistry, pre-optometry, pre-veterinary, pre-pharmacy, pre-physical therapy and pre-sports medicine. Over 300 of our alumni are practicing physicians throughout the United States. Our students have been accepted into 70 medical schools including Duke University, Johns Hopkins University and Washington University.

Environmental Science Emphasis
We must learn to understand and live in harmony with our world in order to maintain a quality of life for ourselves and our children. The alarm against the continued misuse of our environment is being sounded more strongly than ever. The environmental science emphasis prepares students to understand, interact with and respond positively to the challenges affecting humans and their natural world, while at the same time acknowledging the direction of the Holy Spirit.

Biotech lab
The recently updated biotech lab at ORU includes a real-time PCR machine, cell culture and bacterial hoods, an ultraviolet spectrophotometer, ELISA plate reader and many other items necessary for the Methods in Biotechnology course.

ORU Points of Distinction

Alpha Epsilon Delta
Alpha Epsilon Delta is the National Pre-Health Professions Honors Society dedicated to the encouragement and recognition of excellence in pre-professional health scholarship, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and many others. Our society welcomes all students engaged in the pursuit of a healthcare career. AED offers opportunities for intellectual and professional development, provides a forum for students with common interests and extends a program for service to benefit the university community.

Tri-Beta National Biological Honors Society, M Kappa Chapter
Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is a society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. The Mu Kappa Chapter at ORU holds monthly meetings, participates in community service projects and attends the regional convention annually with students presenting seniors research projects.

Biotechnology training
Biotechnology training includes ecological stewardship of Lake Evelyn on campus and a nearby wetlands site.

Cadaver Dissection
The Biology Department at ORU is one of the few undergraduate departments in the southwest U.S. that offers the opportunity to participate in the dissection of human cadavers as part of the honors biology program. Cadaver dissection is a priceless opportunity for any biology student, but is especially exciting for our pre-med students. This program offers a distinct advantage to aspiring physicians as they apply to medical schools across the U.S.

Medical Seminar
This class is offered through the ORU Biology Department. Get an in-depth look at family practice medicine while earning college credit and real life experience.

Shadow Local Health Professionals
Shadowing opportunities are available for physician, nurse practitioner, physician's assistant, occupational therapist, physical therapist and more.

ORU Missions
Each year ORU sends out several teams with a distinctive medical mission. Experience medical missions with a body, mind, spirit emphasis.

Good Samaritan
Good Samaritan Health Services (GSHS) provides a mobile clinic to underserved areas in Tulsa. Operated by Family Medical Care of Tulsa, GSHS welcomes ORU student volunteers. Experience health care in a Christian environment.
