Practical Experience to Boost Your Knowledge

INTERNSHIP PROFILE

Roca Blanca Mission Base

AVCON students have been going to Roca Blanca Mission Base for over a decade. Resident missionary nurse Laura Pratt Nelson, M.S.N., R.N., serves as adjunct faculty. Students assist Laura in the medical clinic on base, do health teaching for students enrolled in the ministry program on base, visit local hospitals and health departments, and travel to remote areas to do health teaching and assist with medical clinics.

In spring 2009, senior nursing student Jennifer Rabe traveled to Roca Blanca Mission Base for the third time. She states, "My favorite part of the trip was the teaching we did at the local health department in Cacalote. We taught basic information on dental hygiene and urinary tract and yeast infections. Although the information was "basic" to us, the teachings were new and interesting to the people of Cacalote. The president of the health department was happy to receive the information and extra supplies to give out. She said she is definitely interested in partnering with ORU in the future. I found this very awesome and encouraging. I absolutely love Roca Blanca and can't wait to go back!"

Because ORU's nursing program is held in universal high regard, you will find numerous opportunities to gain practical experience before completing your degree. In addition to practicum opportunities within the local Tulsa hospitals and with community non-profit organizations, which you can locate through the Career Center's Golden Hire Network, our students get to spend a month during the spring semester of their senior year in a remote missions clinic. A few of the places where our students currently serve and gain valuable experience are:

  • Benin City, Nigeria, where Baby Ben's Children's Hospital is currently under construction
  • Ghana
  • Ivory Coast
  • Roca Blanca Clinic, Oaxaca, Mexico
