Professor, Spanish Language
For years she was known as "The Chocolate Lady" on the ORU campus. As the person responsible for organizing 16 missions and learning trips to, she was selling chocolate bars like hotcakes. In fact, she estimates she's sold a thousand dozen-chocolate bar boxes during her years on campus.
Brenda was raised in Canada and earned her Honors B.A. from the University of Western Ontario, and her Masters from the University of Toronto. She then came to ORU as a professor, and it was there that she met her future husband, Juan Calderon, a native of Spain and an older student finishing up his final two years of college at ORU.
Juan, who came to the United States under the care of evangelist T.L. Osborn, grew up speaking Spanish and learned French and English. Brenda and Juan's honeymoon was a three-month missions trip visiting every country in Central and South America. Juan preached at many of the churches where he had made contacts during his years with T.L. Osborn.
Today, Brenda and Juan have two grown daughters and a precious 14-month-old granddaughter, Julia, whom they adore. Juan recently retired from teaching high school French and Spanish, but he's hardly idle. The family also runs a translation service serving local businesses from their home.
Brenda comments, "It is a pleasure to minister to ORU's students and help them to get ready for their study abroad experiences. Getting to know them one on one is something that has truly enriched my life."
